The Holiday shopping season is upon us! Practically everyone seems to be shopping for something. And with Black Friday just around the corner, many brick and mortar stores will be “on sale” by the weekend. So how do you know you are getting the best deals when shopping at your local retailers? Should you wait and buy that item online? Is it available somewhere else for less?
With a little preparation and a smart phone, you should have all the tools you need to answer these questions, and more. So go on, whether shopping online or shopping in a line, purchase with confidence with these following tips.
1. Load Your Phone with dependable shopping apps.
Just two or three is all you should need. Many deal-finding websites also offer mobile apps, allowing you to take those deals on the road. Just pick your favorite ones, load their mobile apps onto your phone, and you should be good to go, and good to save more! Apps from coupon websites like Coupon Cabin, Coupon Sherpa, Rather Be Shopping, Google Shopper and ShopAdvisor are all very helpful for finding coupons and sales when on the go.
2. Price Compare
Comparing product prices across different retailers can ensure you are getting the best price on the item you want to purchase. So how does one do this? By using a mobile bar code scanner app such as ShopSavvy, RedLaser or Scan. Simply scan the item’s bar code, then decide whether or not that’s the price you want to pay, or should you move on to another store. Decide.com and Google Shopper can also help you decide whether or not that price is worth paying for.
See a QR Code? Scan it! QR codes deliver additional product information often available only by scanning that QR Code. Perhaps the QR code gives you additional incentive to purchase that product, or an additional discount. You just have to scan that QR code to find out! There are lots of QR code scanning apps out there, some better than others. Check out RedLaser, QR Reader, and Scan, three of the more reliable QR code scanner apps.

One thing I have come to rely upon for more efficient Holiday shopping is a mobile gift list. No more arriving at the mall, only to realize I left my hand-written list, complete with sizes, colors and style preferences, at home. There’s lots of gift list apps to choose from, though two favorites are Evernote and ShopAdvisor. Those with iPhones can also use the Notes app.

Got that mobile list created? Great! Now you won’t leave home without it. Unless you forget your mobile device! Oh, and a shopping list will also help keep you on budget!
5. Get the “inside scoop” with Social Media
Whether you “Like” a favorite retailer on Facebook or follow them on Twitter, check in with Foursquare or check in with ShopKick, it’s time to get social. Social media is a rapidly growing avenue for retailers to post their latest sales and promotions. Often that’s the only place you’ll find that deal! So get social with your favorite retailer and find a deal, ’cause if there’s a deal to be found, it’s probably “gone social.”

Have you ever found yourself at checkout, only to realize that you left that all important rewards card at home? Yeah, I know, most stores can look it up but that takes time. With apps like KeyRing, and CardStar simply load all your loyalty cards, store cards, and rewards cards into the app, and always have that card on hand when you need it.

7. Know the Retailer’s online sales and promotions
Got that shopping list ready? Check the retailer’s website before you hit the road, and know what’s on sale. Sometimes the website will list sales and promotions that may not be promoted in the store. That’s ok – many retailers will honor their online website’s prices. You just need to ask, and use your mobile phone to show them the website price.
8. Sign up for Retailers’ Texts
Many retailers will now text you with special offers, coupons, and other promotional information. All you need to do is register your mobile phone number at the retailer’s website. That’s it! You are all set to take advantage of text-message deal alerts. Target, Sears and Best Buy are just a few major retailers who participate in text-message alerts.
Shop Safe! Last but not least, if purchasing items via a mobile device, take the time to ensure your device is secure!
