Is winter getting you down? Got you thinking about a warm, sunny, destination to escape those frigid temps? Are you searching for the ideal family vacation destination? One that can keep the whole family engaged and excited, regardless of age? Then Belize might just be the destination you’ve been searching for!
Here are 5 reasons why families – and anyone else looking for a warm and sunny escape – should consider Belize as their next vacation destination.
1. The Year-Round Tropical Warmth
Not too hot. Not too cold. Yep, that sums up the weather in Belize, where the average year round temperature is a balmy 84 degrees. Whether you need to escape in January or July, you are sure to find the weather pretty darned pleasant in Belize. Even during the cooler months of December and January, the weather is still a warm 80 degrees!
If you are not a fan of rainy weather, then you should know that the rainy season is mid-May to November. But hey, a little rain shouldn’t damper these adventures! And some decent travel deals may be yours if you travel to Belize in May or September.
2. The Mayan Ruins
Belize is loaded with Mayan ruins. Just imagine the thrill on your kids’ faces as they come face to face with an ancient Mayan ruin that’s more than 1,000 years old. When they climb to the top of a ceremonial temple and gaze across the expansive jungle, as if they were Mayan royalty. Or when they stroll across long-ago abandoned Mayan plazas and ball courts as the Mayan people did so very long ago.
Nothing makes history more intriguing, more interesting, and just plain fun, than walking along the very same paths as did an ancient civilization long lost to the modern world. Totally amazing. Truly inspirational!
3. The Jungle Adventures
Adventurous activities a must? Welcome to the jungles of Belize, where the whole family is sure to find an adventure to please. From hikes or horseback rides along winding jungle trails, to caving adventures past 1,000 year old Mayan ruins, to ziplining above a rainforest canopy, Belize is an outdoor adventurer’s playground.
Whether it’s a horseback ride to a hidden waterfall, or a hike in search of jaguar footprints and howler monkeys, Belize has an jungle adventure to please practically any outdoor adventurer. And who knows? You might just meet a local resident howler monkey or toucan while out exploring the jungle.
4. The Beach-Side Relaxation
Check into a Belizian beachfront resort, and be prepared to check out of life’s daily grind. Beachfront vacationers can enjoy snorkeling or scuba diving along pristine coral reefs, warm caribbean sand perfect for dipping toes and building sand castles, and kayaking adventures along ocean shorelines. Or perhaps nothing at all except lazing the day away in an ocean-front infinity pool.
Go on and settle into that gently swaying hammock, a nice glass of fresh coconut water in one hand, and your favorite book in the other. Because these beaches are perfect for enjoying lots of watery adventures, or for doing nothing at all!
5. The Snorkeling
Belize is home to the world’s second largest barrier reef, lending itself to some of the best snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities in the world. The reef spans nearly the whole length of this little gem of a country. That means from practically anywhere along the Belize coastline, you are only a short boat ride away from world-class, pristine, snorkeling.
Hands down, snorkeling in Belize can be pretty darned fantastic. And don’t worry if you or the kids aren’t top-notch snorkelers. No matter the skill level, there is a snorkeling opportunity that will suit your family’s abilities.
Where To Stay On A Belize Family Vacation
The beauty of a vacation in Belize is that you can experience both the jungle and the beach within the same week. Sometimes even within the same day! Belize is small, making it very easy to spend the morning in the jungle, and the afternoon sipping a nice, cool drink in a beachside hammock.
Which begs the question – Where should you stay? At the beach? Or in the jungle? Here’s what I suggest, based upon our own travel experience in Belize.
Families With Younger Children
Stay at the beach and day trip to the jungle. A beachside resort gives families with young children easily accessible adventures to fill the days, and relaxing beachside evenings to calm the kids before bedtime. Every adventure in this blog is attainable from many beachside lodges.
For our first Belize vacation when our children were younger, we stayed at a centrally located beachfront villa. It had just the right mix of down time and adventures perfect for families with younger kids. We went jungle hiking, horseback riding, cave tubing and explored Mayan ruins, all from this one location.
Families With Older Children
Split your time between a jungle resort and a beach resort. Start the vacation at a jungle resort for a more “jungle immersive” adventure. Then finish off the latter half of the vacation unwinding at a beach resort. If total relaxation is not for you, there is still plenty of action near the beach to keep everyone going.
Three or four days at a jungle lodge allows for more in-depth appreciation of the jungle and it’s biodiversity, as well as the opportunity to explore Mayan ruins not as easily attainable from a beachside lodge. Not to mention going to sleep at night to the sounds of the jungle is an experience in itself!

Where’s Your Next Adventure Taking You?
We enjoyed Belize so much, we are returning again for Spring Break. And since our children are older, we are spending four nights in the jungle, and four nights on the beach. And of course, lots of adventures to be had while there! Can’t wait to share it all with you.
How about you? Where’s your next adventure taking you and your family? Do share!
