Rome, Italy. The Eternal City. It’s a destination on many travelers’ bucket lists and for good reason! There is so much to do, so much to see in this vibrant, dynamic city. Art, architecture, ancient history, culture, it’s all here! So how does a traveler on limited time, not familiar with Rome, go about exploring? Do you go it on your own? Do you book a guided tour?
Do both! That’s how we explored this fabulous city. Rome is perfect for meandering at a leisurely pace, for sipping Italian coffee and people watching in piazzas. It is also a city that can be jam packed with tourists, often clogging the streets and paths surrounding Rome’s most iconic sites. Exploring these sites with just the right guided tour can make the difference between simply seeing them, or having an incredible experience.
That’s why we chose to include guided tours to some of Rome’s most crowded sites. There are plenty of guided tour companies with whom you can explore Rome. We chose Walks of Italy. Come see for yourself why we did!
1. The Small Tour Group Sizes
Nothing’s worse than arriving at your designated tour meeting location only to see a swarm of 30, 40, even 50 people also gathering for the same tour, right? Not the case with Walks of Italy! This tour company is all about interactive, informative small group tours. How small? Most tours max at 12-15 people, that’s how small!
A Walks of Italy small group tour ensures a more interactive, personalized experience than those large group tours. Both our Walks of Italy tours were less than 15 people, allowing for easy conversations amongst ourselves and with our guide. Our Walks of Italy headphones also kept us in contact with our guide, even when crowds of other tours surrounded us.
2. The VIP Early Access & Skip The Line Tours
Yes, those iconic Roman sites can be quite crowded, especially in peak summer months. All the more reason for a Walks of Italy VIP Early Access tour! Don’t want to waste time in long entrance queues? Have visions of quiet contemplation in the Sistine Chapel before hoards of others clog the space? Wishing to walk the colosseum before the masses converge? Then a VIP Early Access tour might be your answer!
We chose Walks of Italy as our tour guides in part because of their VIP tours. Our time was limited, and we wanted to avoid standing in long lines where ever possible. With our Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel VIP tour, not only did we skip the long entry queue, we also enjoyed a before-hours walk through magnificent, uncrowded hallways leading to the Sistine Chapel. Quite a different story later in the morning!
3. The Limited & Exclusive Access Venues
Does an uncrowded, up-close experience where few other tourists are allowed to venture sound appealing? Walks of Italy has you covered! Whether it’s exploring the colosseum’s underground level, a rare glimpse into Caesar Augustus’s ancient palace, or an exclusive night-time experience in Pompeii, Walks of Italy delivers limited and exclusive tour experiences you don’t want to miss!
A recent addition to the Walks of Italy line-up is their limited access tour inside Emperor Augustus Caesar and his wife Livia’s personal palaces. Until recently, these ancient domiciles were only open to archeologists and historians. Now, Walks of Italy leads a small number of tours for exclusive inside access, one of which we were part of. It was amazing!
4. The Knowledgeable, Passionate Tour Guides
The Walks of Italy tour guides are knowledgeable in archeology, ancient history, Italian cuisine and so much more. They are also passionate with what they do, and it shows with the stories they share. I don’t think Walks of Italy would have it any other way!
Our Walks of Italy tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable, and perhaps one of the best tour guides we’ve experienced! He was patient, answering our questions, pacing our group at just the right speed. Best of all, he was a treasure trove of historical facts and tidbits, and more than willing to converse about ancient Roman history with our twelve year old history buff.
5. The Plethora of Tour Choices
Need a quick all-in-one-day tour? Want an informative yet leisurely stroll through the side streets of Rome? Have an extra day to venture beyond the city? Venice or Florence on your travel plans? Walks of Italy has you covered!
With over 70 small group tours across Italy, there’s sure to be several to pique your interests. No matter your touring style, activity level, interests, or age, Walks of Italy has a tour to match. Maybe too many choices! It can be tough deciding which tour to experience. Not sure what tour to choose? Just give Walks of Italy a shout out and they’ll help you pick!
Our Walks of Italy Tours
Our five days in Rome were made even more special with our Walks of Italy tours. We explored the colosseum, Palatine Hill and Caesar’s Palace with the VIP Caesar’s Palace tour. With the Pristine Sistine tour, we skipped the long entrance queue for a before-hours, uncrowded experience inside the Sistine Chapel. We had high expectations, and each tour delivered!
Our only regret? That we didn’t have enough time to squeeze in more Walks of Italy tours! If one day we return again to Rome, Walks of Italy will be our go-to-guides. I think their pasta making class and night-time Pompeii tour will be on our must-do list! Or perhaps the crypts and catacombs. Or maybe all three!

Note: I received complimentary admissions from Walks of Italy to both the Colosseum and Vatican tours. However, all opinions are my own. I really do think this is a fabulous tour company!
