Shopping for a new family room look? Perhaps it’s new sheets for the guest room and towels for your bathroom. Ski slopes calling, but your skis are just so outdated? Don’t despair! Right now is a great time to buy these items, and more. Why? Mid-winter sales and clearances, that’s why!
Holiday Decorations, Cards and Wrapping Paper
The holiday are over. All those holiday decorations and wrapping paper are packed away for another nine months. Or not! Retailers don’t want to hold onto holiday-related inventory until the next holiday. Their overstock equals your gain. Pickings might be slim, but the discounts are steep as retailers unload Holiday 2012 supplies.
Electronics and Tech Gadgets
Come mid-winter, retailers discount many of last year’s tech gadgets, especially cameras and TVs. Why? Two reasons: The Consumer Electronics Show and unsold holiday inventory. Manufacturers’ latest and greatest TV’s, cameras, and other electronic goodies debuted last week at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show and will soon be making their way onto retailers’ shelves. Combine that with unsold inventory left over from the holiday, and the end result is a boon for the mid-winter tech shopper. Retailers need to clear out last year’s inventory and make room for the newest 2013 models. It’s a sweet time to pick up some cool deals on TVs and cameras!
The Infamous White Sale
It’s not just about whites! All colors of linens, sheets and towels find their way to the clearance aisles in January. So if you are in need of freshening up that bathroom or bedroom, now’s a good time to do it.
Home Goods, Furniture, Carpeting and Flooring
Mid-winter is also a great time to take on that home decorating project you’ve been thinking about. Whether you are searching for a new rug, sofa table, or a whole new living room, home goods sales are aplenty right now. Many people redecorate before the holidays, just in time for the influx of family and friends. January rolls in, and home decorating is the lowest priority on most shopping lists. That’s exactly why you should have it at the forefront!
A new sofa on your wishlist? Now might be just the time to purchase one. Mid-winter is a slow time for furniture retailers. Boo for them. Yeah for you! Floor model sales are everywhere, making right now a sweet time to furniture shop. Retailers have an extra incentive to make a deal – the 2013 styles will be hitting showroom floors by March and retailers are wont to find space for these new pieces.
A recent visit to my local Ethan Allen store found not only floor models on sale at some pretty awesome prices, but an additional 10% off any purchase until January 31st. Upon asking why much of the store was on “floor model clearance” the store manager confirmed my thoughts. He needed to make room for 2013 inventory due to arrive soon.
What? It’s still winter – so why is this stuff on sale? Because most people pick up their winter gear at the beginning of the winter season. Retailers don’t want to be left out in the cold at the end of the season so many are already beginning steep discounts on winter hats, gloves, scarves, skis, jackets, and many other cold gear items.
So if you’ve got a winter or early spring snow adventure in your future, now’s a good time to stock up on snowy cold essentials and gear. Have growing kids at home? Pick up gloves and hats for next season too.
Treadmills and ellipticals, weights and barbells. Yep, these items and many other fitness-based items are also on sale right now. Why? Well, are you one of the millions whose New Year’s resolution is to – get fit, eat less, loose weight, exercise more? Retailers want to capitalize on this momentum, before we begin to wane in our enthusiasm to stick with our New Year’s fitness resolutions.
January is also a great time to purchase a new bike. Again, the holidays are over, and the 2013 inventory will be arriving in just a matter of weeks, ready and waiting for spring to burst forth. Sporting goods stores need to make room for the new inventory.
Overstocked holiday gift sets are on steep discount right now. Pick some up, repackage them, and you are now all set with great Valentine’s Day gifts, and perhaps even a Mother’s Day gift! Purchase perfumes now, and take advantage of the ongoing sales before the Valentine’s Day price increase. It’s a great way to save money and gift a sweet bouquet that will last well beyond Valentine’s Day.
Retailers need to unload that excess holiday toy inventory, making this the ideal time to stock up on toys for future needs. Kids’ birthday parties, your own child’s birthday. Consider a charitable contribution. Buy a few extra items at that toy clearance sale, donate them to your local children’s hospital, and put a smile on a sick child’s face!
By the end of January, 2013 calendars will be making their way to the steep discount shelves. Retailers don’t want to be stuck with these items come February. That’s a win for you! There still eleven months left in the year – plenty of calendar time left!
