This is a different kind of travel post. It’s not about travel to far away places, nor the family vacation out West. So what is the destination? My own backyard, caught in the throes of Mother Nature’s wrath. The adventure? To explore, trusted camera in hand, all that Mother Nature decided to dump upon us on one not-so-sunny February day.
So walk along with me. Explore an ice storm at it’s finest – or worst! As the saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But even in moments of Mother Nature’s wrath such as this was, there is beauty aplenty – all depending on how you picture it, of course.
Pull up a chair, have a seat, and enjoy images of Mother Nature at work on one not so fine day in February. I’d offer you one of our chairs, but it’s a little iced over!
Behold An Icy Winter Wonderland
Perhaps you heard about the ice storm that took hold of Philadelphia and it’s surrounding areas one recent February morning. It was an ice storm that stopped many of us dead in our tracks, paralyzing much of southeastern Pennsylvania. Oh what a day it was!
Awakening to ice everywhere. The sounds of trees branches snapping, succumbing to the weight of layers of ice not-so-gently coating their limbs. But look closely. There is a beauty within the ice. Perhaps it’s a raw and wild kind of beauty, but beauty nonetheless.
It was the kind of beauty that one hopes might quickly melt away. Really. Melt away. And fast! Before that next tree comes down and takes a power line with it! Yes, it was truly a storm to remember for those of us caught in Mother Nature’s wrath.
At it’s worst, nine out of ten homes in our county were without power. Including our home. But the beauty remained, surrounding us if we dared take a moment to relish it.
So as the power zapped out, leaving us in darkness, what else was there to do but explore? To seek out the depth of beauty found in the midst of the chaos that is an ice storm.
For beauty was everywhere that day. Even among all those tree branches normally reaching for the sky, now dipping down low to the ground, heavily laden with ice.
Yes, there was most definitely beauty within this potent ice storm that Mother Nature so graciously bestowed upon us.
Enjoy The Beauty That Is Mother Nature
So whether that next travel adventure takes you half way across the world, or half way across your back yard, keep that camera handy! Because beauty surrounds you at every step. Even during such damaging storms as was upon us this one February day.
And yes. We survived the ice storm of February 2014, not so fondly known in our house as Icemaggedon. Nothing makes you appreciate heat, electricity and a warm cup of hot chocolate more than when Mother Nature decides to take it all away for a few days!
Do you have an ice story to share? Perhaps it’s your own story of Mother Nature’s wrath. Did you capture images of that wrath with your camera? Share your story in the Comments below.
