If I had to pick just one holiday of the year as my favorite, Thanksgiving would be it. Yummy foods. Fine wines. Scrumptious desserts. Tasty turkey leftovers in the days to follow. Best of all, time spent with cherished family and friends. What’s not to love about it?
Like many who celebrate Thanksgiving, our Thanksgiving meal is filled with traditions and recipes passed down over the years, with a few “twists” of our own mixed in. We are building our own Thanksgiving traditions, merging the old with the new, in the goals of creating a Thanksgiving tradition the next generation will continue well into the future.
My Thanksgiving By The Numbers
So far, my goal is a success! My children are already anticipating Thanksgiving Day, making plans of how much they will eat, and what will be their favorite part this year. But I wonder, how does this family’s Thanksgiving numbers stack up to others? A survey of 1000 people revealed some very interesting facts about Thanksgiving. So I decided to compare my responses to several questions with the survey results. Interesting, indeed!
What is The Most Favorite Side Dish?
My favorite side dish? Stuffing! Our Thanksgiving meal isn’t complete without two different types of stuffing on the table. We prepare a bread-based stuffing complete with apples and raisins, as well as a sausage stuffing that is a long-standing family tradition. Though that green bean casserole can run a close second.
Seems like we are on par with the survey respondents. Would it surprise you to learn that 32% of Americans say stuffing is their favorite side dish, and 24% chose mashed potatoes as their favorite? Would it also surprise you to learn that your choice of stuffing or mashed potatoes may be influenced by where you live?
What is The Most Googled Recipe?
I recently googled Sweet Potato Casserole. Not pie. Casserole. It’s another side dish that has been a part of our family Thanksgiving meal for many years. However, my boys don’t really care for the version made in years’ past, so this year, it’s time for a more modern variation of sweet potato casserole!
This is where I deviate from the survey. And how! By a landslide, pies are the most googled recipes for Thanksgiving. My googled recipe? It didn’t even make the list. :/
How Are People Eating Leftovers?
Oh, those Thanksgiving leftovers. Sometimes we look forward to them as much as the main meal! Our family favorite Thanksgiving leftovers are turkey noodle soup and turkey fajitas. It’s a blend of an old family tradition (soup) with a new family tradition (fajitas).
The number one leftover meal? Casserole. Our family favorite turkey fajita recipe didn’t make the list, but our turkey soup we will be savoring the week after Thanksgiving sure did. And you know, maybe turkey fajitas will catch on. They are quite yummy, and easy to make.

What’s Your Favorite Thanksgiving Tradition?
I have loved the Thanksgiving holiday for as long as I can remember. As a child, I loved the smells wafting through the house, the chaos as our extended family gathered, voices raising above each other as they talked about everything under the sun. For me, Thanksgiving was more about our family gathering than about the foods that were served.
Today, though our family gatherings are much smaller as we have spread far and wide across the country, I still look forward to this time of year. I continue the traditions my parents set forth, and hope that my own children will continue these same traditions, with a few new ones mixed in, when they become adults. To me, that is the true treasure of Thanksgiving.
How about you? Do you celebrate Thanksgiving? How will you spend your Thanksgiving Day? What’s your favorite Thanksgiving tradition? Do you have a favorite Thanksgiving food, one that you just can’t wait to sink your teeth into? Do share!
Happy Thanksgiving! I’ll be stepping away for a few days to enjoy a little R&R with the family. See you in a few.
