Looking for just the right escape this fall season? Perhaps one last outdoor adventure before the cold settles in? A weekend to disconnect from electronics, and reconnect with the kids? Wishing to leave behind the concrete jungle and be one with Mother Nature? To sleep beneath a canopy of trees all aflame with fall colors? Then go camping!
Whether it’s a backwoods camping adventure, a weekend family escape to a nearby lake, or an extended gathering of friends and family up in the woods, there’s nothing quite like fall camping. The weather may be cooler, but don’t let that deter you from enjoying the great outdoors with a cool weather camping adventure!
Why Go Camping in the Fall?
Why consider fall camping? Why not! Fall is a wonderful time for an outdoor weekend adventure. And camping in the fall months has it’s advantages! Think pleasant day time temperatures and cool crisp evenings spent around the campfire.
Think less crowds clogging campgrounds. Greater likelihood of wildlife spotting with fewer people about. Cool and comfortable hiking weather and wide open trails. Incredible beach and ocean-front campsites open for the taking. Campsites available for reduced rates. And perhaps one of the most compelling reasons for fall camping? The stunning fall foliage!
Though days may be shorter and evenings often cooler, fall camping can be very enjoyable! Fall camping means hiking wooded trails ablaze in fall colors, fishing in nearby stream, or simply reading a book near a roaring campfire. And of course, roasting marshmallows! These are just a few of the reasons that make fall a favorite time of the year to camp.
One of our own most memorable fall camping experiences was outside Freeport Maine, just after Labor Day. Our objective was an ocean front campsite, a difficult feat to achieve during coastal Maine’s busy summer months. With our September arrival date, not only did we secure an ocean front campsite, we were able to enjoy an incredible ocean venue practically all to ourselves. Oh, and with a few friends by the evening campfire!
Tips To Planning A Fall Camping Trip
Don’t let the cooler weather deter you from fall camping! Cooler weather simply makes that evening campfire all the more enjoyable, and nothing a few extra layers of clothing can’t fix. But before you head out the door, camping gear in hand, you might want to adjust that summer camping pack list! A little extra pre-trip planning and preparation will go a long way to ensure a more pleasant fall camping experience. Here’s ten fall weather adjustments to keep your camping adventure on track:
- Check weather before you pack. Check it again the day you leave! Fall weather is fickle!
- Pack extra layers for unexpectedly cooler evenings, and a rain jacket too.
- Don’t forget to include hats and mittens in your cool-weather gear!
- Pack an extra sleeping pad to better insulate you from the cooler ground.
- Pack a cold-weather sleeping bag and an extra blanket for if it’s colder than expected.
- Don’t forget the bug spray! They are still out and about in the fall.
- Pack extra lighting like headlamps. It will get darker earlier.
- Bring easy-to-prepare foods like soup and hot chocolate to quickly warm cool bodies.
- Bring a tarp for extra rain protection, both above you and beneath your tent.
- Ensure you have plenty of wood for that evening campfire.

Do You Enjoy Camping in the Fall?
Camping has long been a family favorite activity. We enjoy the opportunity for everyone to disconnect from the daily grind, and to reconnect as a family. We’ve tent camped and glamped, slept beneath the stars and slept on a beach. Hiked beneath a fall canopy ablaze in color, and fished for our dinner. All fond memories of past fall camping adventures. Thankfully we had a back up dinner plan for when the fish weren’t biting!
