Airfare is often the biggest expense for travelers. Who doesn’t want to cut down on how much they pay for that flight! Saving here means more money to spend there. Consider these top tips before you book that next vacation, and you might just save yourself a bundle.
My Top Five Tips for Finding Your Best Airfare.
Not sure how to find your best airfare? What things you can do to give you a leg up in your cheap airfare quest? Here are my top five tips and tricks that I consider every time I search for my own best airfare. Put them into action the next time you begin your own cheap airfare hunt, and increase your chances of scoring a better airfare.
1. Be Destination Flexible
It’s a big, wide world, full of adventure around every corner, and across every continent. Keep your destination options open, and you can potentially save a bundle on airfare.
2. Consider Flights To Alternate Airports
Don’t overlook the option of flying into a nearby regional airport. That smaller airport 50 miles away might just offer a significant fare savings. For example, if San Diego is your destination, consider flying into Los Angeles, or Orange County, and enjoy the drive to San Diego. And the car rental fees might be less too!
3. Become Airfare Price Knowledgeable
Become an informed air traveler before you book your flights. Estimate the average range for airfare prices, and how much you are willing to pay for that airline ticket. Armed with this information, you’ll be able to spot a great airfare when it happens. When you do see that fare, jump on it. If it’s that good, it’s not going to last long.
It’s easier than you think to be airfare savvy. Fare tracking sites like Google Flights, Hopper, Skyscanner and Hipmunk can keep you on top of the latest airfares, and even send you alerts when prices change. Also sign up for emails from your favorite airlines, and follow them on their social media platforms for the latest notifications of airfare sales.
4. Fly During Off-Peak Seasons and Off-Peak Hours
Flying during an airline’s less popular hours of early morning and later evening can score you some pretty significant savings. So can flying to destinations during shoulder seasons or off-season. Why? It’s called supply and demand. The more the demand is for seats, the less the airline has to discount the fare to sell those seats. Airlines are crafty that way, right?
5. Check Fares For Mid-Week Flights
Do you really have to fly on a Sunday? If not, consider flying on a slower travel day, like Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Most vacationers tend to fly between Friday night and Sunday afternoon. Avoid these times, and you might be pleasantly surprised by the airfare savings you can score.
