It’s the final countdown to Halloween! I love Halloween. Witches, ghosts, goblins, and candy, what’s not to love? Well, there is one thing I don’t love about Halloween, and that’s spending a lot of money on Halloween costumes.
How about you? Are you searching for a Halloween costume that won’t break the bank? Have no fear! There are lots of DIY costumes that are easy to make and won’t take a big bite out of your wallet. So let’s get this Halloween costume making bash started!
Four Easy and Inexpensive DIY Halloween Costumes
What? You say you aren’t crafty enough to make your own? No time to spare? Hey, if I can make these Halloween costumes with my limited craft skills and time, I bet you can too! And yes, I really have made each one of these costumes.
1. The Escaped Convict
Calling all prison wardens. There’s a prison break about to happen! The Escaped Convict costume requires three items – black sweat pants, a black tee-shirt and orange or white duct tape. Got the goods? Now create prison stripes across both the pants and the shirt with the duct tape. Ta-da! Your convicts are ready to escape.
Now for the finishing touch. Add your inmate’s “prison number” to the back of the shirt, and the “state penitentiary” on the front with a black Sharpie.
Ready to head out? Add a black knit hat and you now have a warm and toasty Halloween costume. Best of all, this costume can be recycled once the Halloween festivities are over. Simply remove the duct tape and the clothes are ready for “non-prison” wear.
Alternate idea: Escaped Convict not your style? Use the same concept to transform blue sweat pants and tee shirt into “The Nighttime Sky.” Use glow in the dark moon and stars to complete the look. It’s also a great way to find your kid at night!
2. The Cardboard Box
Got a cardboard box in the house? Cut out holes for the head and arms, and that boring box transforms into just about anything you want it to be – a robot, a T.V., even a box of candy. It won’t take long to elevate a simple brown box into a costume as unique as you are. It’s also an easy, budget friendly answer for a last minute costume.
All you need is the box and a little imagination. Oh and a few craft supplies like paint, colored wide-tip markers, duct tape, tin foil, and pipe cleaners. Who knew that boring old cardboard box could transform into a pretty amazing Halloween costume?

3. A Family of Dalmatians
What’s more fun than a family of dalmatians? A family in dalmatian costumes! And creating dalmatian costumes is quite simple. Start with a white hoodie, add circles cut from black felt (or draw spots with a black magic marker) and your pack will be ready in no time for a howling good Halloween.
Be creative! Add a collar and floppy ears. Use washable markers to paint a black nose and whiskers on the face. For more details on creating your own dalmatian costume check out these step by step instructions from eHow.
4. Toga! Toga! Toga!
Got sheets? In need of a simple yet stylish Halloween costume? Get your toga on! Transforming a sheet into a toga is even easier than I thought it was! Twin sheets work best, but in a pinch, a full sized sheet can be used. You could also use one to two yards of fabric instead of a sheet.
Create head-gear from inexpensive plastic leaves found at practically any arts and craft store. Add a belt or gold rope at the waist, throw on some flip flops and shazaam! You’ve become a Greek god or goddess. Or an awesomely cute toddler.
The toga costume is so easy, even my teenage boy can do it. He’s sporting one this week for a school project on ancient Greece. WikiHow’s How to Make a Toga out of a Bedsheet will have you out the door in minutes to that Halloween fright fest.
