Chincoteague Island is a laid back, family-friendly destination just right for getting away from it all. This serene coastal locale along Virginia’s Eastern Shore is where visitors come to escape. And it’s where we found ourselves on a weekend get-away, intent on a little rest & relaxation from our own hectic lives back home.
Chincoteague Island is also where we found a national wildlife refuge, quaint small town atmosphere, and loads of family fun as well as adventures begging to be experienced.
Come along on one of our adventures. Cruise Chincoteague Island’s back bays with us and discover for yourself a little slice of serenity, and loads of family fun.
Back Bay Discoveries and Watery Explorations
Are you ready to be schooled on the wet & wild side of Chincoteague Island? Great, because Captain Barry’s Backbay Cruise is ready to depart. Intrepid explorers of all ages will enjoy this 2-hour mildly active discovery cruise through Chincoteague’s back bays.
Captain Barry encourages first-hand exploration and hands-on involvement, with lots of discoveries in between. Perhaps you’ll find yourselves digging in the mud in search of clams along a sandbar, still wet from the recently receded tide.
Maybe the kids will help haul in a trawler net in search of what’s living just beneath the water’s surface. It’s not as easy as it looks! But it sure is fun to try.
Let’s see what we found today? Oh look, it’s a blue crab, some seaweed, a few snails and shells too. Not bad for today’s fresh catch. Watch out for those pincers!
Cruising with Captain Barry is so much fun, the kid’s won’t even realize they are being “schooled” in back bay ecosystems and waterway conservation.
Learning Fun By Hands-On Adventures & Exiting Finds
Every day a different discovery, every day a different experience. That’s what a cruise through Chincoteague’s back bays offers those who come for the ride. And Captain Barry seems to know all the secrets of where to find the “good stuff” along these water ways.
With plenty of off-the-boat experiences, Captain Barry keeps every one engaged and having fun. Keep an eye open as you walk along the sandy shore line. Who knows what you might discover. Maybe a blue crab pincher mixed in with shells left behind in the last tide.
Watch where you walk! Those little holes may be the homes of tiny resident crabs. Oh look! There’s one now. Catch him if you can! He’s pretty darned fast. Be gentle, though, if you catch one. And don’t let him pinch your toes!
Wow. Look at that! A horseshoe crab shell, begging to be investigated. Go on, pick it up and check it out. That’s what this cruise is all about, hands-on fun. Pretty awesome, huh!
Who knows what will wash up on shore as the tide goes out. Today, it was a jelly fish, left behind as the tide rolled out. Tomorrow, it could be something else. Careful, now!
Discovering Ocean Fresh Oysters
Who’s ready for another fun discovery along this back bay ecosystem? It’s time to go oyster hunting, and Captain Barry knows exactly where to look. This seems like a great spot to find a few fresh oysters ripe for picking.
Anyone up for tasting an oyster plucked fresh from the water? That’s right! You might even have the opportunity to taste a fresh oyster, still dripping with the ocean water it was plucked from.
It doesn’t get any more fresh than that! Hmm. Judging by that face, I’m not sure he’s developed a love of fresh oysters today!
Gone Backbay Crabbing in Chincoteague!
Ready for another back bay adventure? Great, because it’s time for a crabbing lesson! Let’s get this boat out into deeper water in search of a prime crabbing spot, complete with crab pots just waiting to be checked out.
Go on now. Pull that crabbing pot up and see what’s inside. Captain Barry will help you if needed. Great! Looks like this crabbing pot contains several crabs. Let’s haul it onto the boat now and take a closer look inside.
Wow! Check out this crab. Watch out how you hold him. You don’t want to hurt him, nor do you want to get pinched. Ouch! Thankfully Captain Barry knows how to hold a crab and he’ll show you too how to properly hold it.
Don’t worry. This was a “capture and release” discovery and adventure today. All crabs were released to continue upon their watery ways.
