With its diverse cultures and amazing, vast landscapes, India has all the makings of a wonderful year-round vacation destination. From incredible rainforests to magnificent mountains, sun kissed beaches to sandy desert terrains, cities rich in history and culture to tiny mountain villages full of charm, India has something to offer nearly every traveler.
During the summer months, much of India is under the influence of scorching heat. But not everywhere! This rise in temperature and humidity entices travelers to seek respite in the cooler regions of the country. Here are five refreshing destinations in India perfect for a summer escape that’s bound to be very pleasant and energetic.
Rishop, West Bengal
Rishop is one of those hamlets you’ve read about in the classics. This tiny village is a serene, cool place in the lap of the Himalayas, and one of West Bengal’s offbeat destinations where tourists come to enjoy the grandeur of mountain beauty. The blue sky during the day, with scattered sunlight playing hide-and-seek behind pine and fir trees, is a wonderful sight. At night, the sky is lit by twinkling stars and the glowing moon. It is almost as if the evening sky is singing a lullaby through the cool breezes blowing against the colorful orchids. Enjoying a nighttime bonfire and star-gazing in West Bengal is sure to rejuvenate each and every tourist.

India’s hot, dry summers can indeed make life miserable. Planning an escape to Mawsynram during summer may just be one of the best travel plans yet! Mawsynran is the wettest place on earth, and is sure to surprise travels to this region with sufficient, refreshing rainfall. A dance in the rain or floating paper boats in a fresh puddle of water, which may seem impossible during summer in other regions, can be a dream come true in Mawsynram.

Mt. Abu, Rajasthan
Mount Abu is the highest peak of the Aravalli Range, and is another destination tourists rush to in summer to escape the heat. The serene, cool climate and clear blue sky of the Mount Abu region deliver a soothing effect to the tiresome eyes of travelers seeking a summer respite. A walk down winding mountain roads while breathing in the cool, fresh air, sipping a coffee by the side of the lake, or enjoying a bonfire at the camp site can indeed turn a trip to Mt. Abu into one of the most enjoyable trips ever!

Ootacamund or Ooty is a quiet hill station in Karnataka. Known as the Queen of Hill Stations, Ooty is a remarkable destination to visit in summer because of its pleasant weather. The flora and fauna here contain some of the rarest species on earth. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience a safari to see this region’s incredible flora and fauna, whether by day or by night! Travelers to Ooty can also enjoy the aroma of coffee while sitting by the lake, savoring a peaceful moment perfect for introspection and time with oneself.

Chandipur is a not-so-common and not-overcrowded beach region in Odisha. With minimal commercialization influencing the beaches here, Chandipur is still filled with natural beauty. Vast expanses of uncrowded beaches invite tourists to immediately jump into the advancing waves. Children and adults alike will enjoy building sand castles, playing beach volleyball and taking a sea bath. After a day at the beach, visitors can enjoy fresh fish that fishermen bring back from the sea as well as sipping fresh coconut water. The enjoyment that Chandipur offers is unparalleled to other more commercialized and popular sea beaches in India.
