Discover Desti – My New Trip Planning Advisor

I stumbled upon Desti last week as I was exploring options for our family’s 2014 summer vacation, a two week road trip across a 1000 miles with stops at five different destinations. A bit complex to plan, right? Or at least it used to be, until I met Desti. I have to say, I was pretty impressed with this powerful travel app. Here’s why!

Meet Desti – A Powerhouse Trip Planning App

Meet my new-found trip planning adviser and partner, Desti. This powerhouse of an app helps you find just the right hotels, attractions, activities and restaurants for that next trip, without ever leaving the app. You tell Desti where you want to go and what you want to do. Desti does the rest, searching and reporting back with hotels, activities and dining options that best match what you are looking for, even mapping them out for you!

Best of all, Desti is easy to use. Simply ask Desti your trip planning questions, and Desti can have that next trip planned in a flash! Here’s five trip planning scenarios that can be answered with just this one powerful app.

1. What’s The Right Accommodations for Me?

And at the prices you want to pay! Whether you need a pet friendly hotel, a kid friendly resort, or an upscale hotel, just ask Desti. In less than you can say sassafras three times, you’ll have a list of accommodations that best match your request. You can even book hotels through Desti via Expedia or Hotels.com.

2. Find Nearby Activities and Attractions

Looking for stuff to do at your destination? Searching for a family friendly tour, or the best place for a night out on the town? Ask Desti and just like that, you’ll have a list of activities and attractions in and around your destination that best fit what you want to do.

3. Make Dinner Plans

Got a hankering for a burger? Or maybe you are planning a special family dinner? Just ask Desti! Desti will let you know what dining options are nearby, including type of food served and reviews from others who’ve dined there.

4. Map Your Trip

Planning a road trip? Desti can help you put it all together. Use the app to quickly find hotels, activities and restaurants for each destination along your driving route, and then map it out for you. Read 7 Easy Steps to An Awesome Roadtrip at the Desti blog and see for yourself how to put Desti to work planning your next road trip.

5. Share Trip Plans With Others

Found that perfect hotel, the attractions you want to experience? Save them with just a swipe of of the screen. Then share your trip with others and plan it together!

Desti_beachA

So go on. Just ask Desti! See how it can simplify your searches the next time you plan a trip. Learn more about Desti at the Desti Blog.

Getting Started with Desti

Note: Desti is currently only available for Apple devices, and works best with the iPadI sure hope the Desti gurus expand this awesome app to other mobile devices soon!

Got your iPad ready? Now download the Desti App.

Desti_ipadA

Then, ask Desti your trip planning questions. Family friendly hotels in Washington DC next weekend? Got it! Activities for that two week road trip through Utah and Arizona? Got that too! Recommended restaurants along Route 66 in Airzona? Yep, Desti can answer that question as well.

Desti_ipad1A

That’s all there is to it! Just tell Desti your specific trip need and Desti is off to find the best matches. Within seconds, you have a list of options to complete that trip planning.

What I Love About Desti

It’s the overall simplicity of the app. I love how easily and quickly I am able to find and save key components of my trips without ever leaving the app.

I recently put Desti to the test planning two different trips – a last minute excursion to a nearby city, and our tentative summer of 2014 family vacation.

The Summer 2014 Trip – In less than thirty minutes, I was able to make a rough plan for a road trip that includes five different destinations across 1000 miles. I quickly identified hotels at each destination that meet our family’s travel needs as well as recommended activities and dining options. Loved it!

The Last Minute Excursion – Success again! Within minutes I had a list of hotels that fit my budget as well as activities for the whole family.

Desti_logoAI’m keeping my eye on Desti! It’s definitely a potential game-changer for how I plan trips. It might just be the next generation of travel apps.

Hi Carol, Desti sounds fantastic! I haven’t planned complex road trips because I’ve been overwhelmed. Desti may just give me the courage that I need to give it a try.

Last month I went on a college tour with my daughter. I definitely would have used Desti to help plan that trip. We will have another tour when we find out where she has been accepted so I will turn to Desti for that trip!

I have two questions for you about Desti. First, is it US only? Second, when you share your upcoming trip on Desti, is it public? For example, I may want to plan an itinerary and then run it by my hubby or daughter but I don’t want the entire world to know my plans. Is it possible to share privately?

Thanks for letting us know about Desti, Carol!

Hi Carolyn, I see that Emily has answered your questions, below! Glad you too see how cool this app is. Keep an eye on Desti .. .they have more new features that are about to launch. And as Emily says, you might like the Plan Together feature. I’m going to give it a try when I start working more on our 1000 mile road trip.
      Happy travels!

  2. This app was designed with you and your family in mind. It is amazing and I can see how helpful you will find it. Your 2014 trip sounds very impressive and if we were doing that I would definitely plan ahead as you are doing. I am not one to wing it much when traveling. Sometimes I can. But I like to at least have my accommodations planned out.

Hi Sicorra, yes, Desti was definitely made with my family in mind! I hope that they expand it to other countries too. It would have been so helpful for our road trip in Canada last summer.
Yes, our 2014 summer plans are starting to fall into place. I want to be ready with a plan by January to hopefully find a flight deal in the January airfare sales. I am a planner, can’t wing it either. It’s also how I’m able to find the deals!

      Happy weekend!

Hey Sicorra, Emily from Desti left this response for you … wanted to make sure you saw it:
      Hi Sicorra,

Thanks for supporting Desti! We aim to be family friendly

As a side note, we are in the process of adding vacation rentals into Desti, so you’ll soon have even more accommodation options!

Hi Carolyn, Thanks for asking about Desti! I work here at Desti, and I’m happy to address some of your questions and concerns.

    1) At the moment, Desti covers only the US. We have been working hard to make Desti the most comprehensive travel planner for the US, and we are now starting to turn our attention to international destinations. Please stay posted! I’d love to hear where you would like to see Desti expand to.

    2) It’s easy to control the privacy settings in Desti for a more customize experience. If you log into Facebook with Desti, your Facebook friends will be able to see when you create a trip plan and add things to a trip plan. However, Desti has a “private mode” where you can make all of your activities in Desti completely private to you.

We just implemented a new feature in Desti called Plan Together, where you can actually invite your husband and/or daughter to plan a trip collaboratively in Desti (like a Google Doc). For more information, please see here: http://blog.desti.com/index.php/2013/desti-adds-plan-together-and-been-there/.

For more information in general, please check out this blog that talks about some of our new features: http://blog.desti.com/index.php/2013/we-built-a-new-desti-for-you/. There’s a link in that blog for more information about planning a road trip in Desti.

I’m here at emily@desti.com if you have any further questions or ideas for Desti. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Hi Emily, Thanks so much for answering Carolyn’s questions. I’ve had a lot of positive response since this post went out … I think people really like Desti! Can’t wait until you expand beyond the US. Any chance for Europe in the near future? I plan to take my boys for a two week excursion to Europe in summer of 2015 and Desti could be so helpful.
I tinkered with the Plan Together feature. Will be using it in January when I put together a more solid road trip for next summer and need to share my plans with family.

Looking forward to even more, can’t wait! And thanks for building such a useful, powerful travel app.

This looks really good and I was all set to try it, then saw it’s only available for Apple devices – unfortunately I’m one of the three people left on the planet who doesn’t yet own an iPad – my PCs are on Windows and my phone’s a droid, so unfortunately I can’t use this yet. I also see from the comment above that it only works in the US – ah well, never mind. Maybe they’ll extend the service in future – it looks very interesting :)

    Hey Carol,

Now that does sound very handy but I don’t have an iPad, only an iPhone. Not that I’m planning any trips soon but I will eventually be buying a new car and am going to give my old one to my nephew. He lives in Nashville, TN so we haven’t gotten to that point yet but I might be driving it to him. That’s an all day trip but it doesn’t have to be ya know.

I might take my Mom and my dog along for company so making a few stops definitely wouldn’t hurt any. I know, I’m such the road warrior right!

Another great share and I see Carolyn was definitely interested in this one. She does love sharing about tech gadgets and this one is a real gem.

Thanks so much for the kind words Adrienne! And a drive with Mom sounds like it could be lots of fun. We have gotten into some pretty long ones, now that the kids are older and the “I have to go to the bathroom” every ten minute phase is over. I’d actually love to rent an RV and go cross country for 3-4 weeks – but it’s my husband’s nightmare trip so I don’t think we will be doing that one anytime soon. Sticking to the 10-14 day road trips. :)

So when you get ready to plan that road trip to your nephew, check out Desti – they are adding more and more to the app!

      Happy Monday!

Hi Tanya, Desti is fun the dream with. And who knows, you might just create a trip you will eventually book. I did when trying out the app. I now have a decently plotted out summer vacation that I think we are going to take this year.

  13. Corina RamosTwitter: notnowmomsbusy says:

    Hi Carol,

I can’t wait for summer! This winter has been miserable and I can’t stop eating the bad foods that’s keeping me warm, LOL.

We’re planning a vacation this summer too. Of course we plan one every year but the hubs ends up working so we push it back until we can’t anymore.

This year I made him promise :).

I’m not an iPad user but this sure sounds like a great app…perhaps they’ll have one available for Samsung Galaxy :).

Thanks for sharing this with us! Have a wonderful weekend!

I’m with you Corina! I’m from “snow country” and I can’t wait for this winter to end. I think this last one that stormed through PA did me in! Four days of no power, sick kids, no school … yep, I’m done and turning my sites to planning a warm summer adventure.

  14. corinneTwitter: thehomebizmom says:

What a great find Carol! Desti sounds like a really useful travel app. I’m bookmarking this for when we go on our next trip (which probably won’t be until 2015 LOL -gotta do some saving!)

Thanks so much for sharing this!

    • carolbiederman says:

Hi Corinne, thanks! Yes, I believe Desti is a very handy travel tool. I just plotted out a summer trip for our family pretty easily with it. Even if you aren’t going until 2015, Desti can help you plan your budget … and get you thinking about where you really want to go. Happy trip searching!

  15. Arelis CintronTwitter: djrelat7 says:

I’m actually looking to plan out a trip to Europe in the fall… I hope Desti comes out for Android device like Kindle … which they had a website that did the same as well. This sounds like it would help out with my planning tremendously!

    • carolbiederman says:

Hi Arelis. That sounds so exciting! I so want to go to Europe – where are you heading? I’ve been to England, Scotland, France and Germany. Loved each destination. I’m hoping to take my boys in the next year or so, but with rising air fare and the need for four airline tix, it’s a bit pricey for our budget at this moment. :(

I don’t think Desti is quite there yet to help on this trip. Right now they are in the US, Canada, and Mexico. There are other helpful planning tools for your trip, all depending on what you are looking for. And I agree, I wish their website was a full-feature site like the app. But they are new, and growing so who knows what the future will hold for them.

      Happy travels! Happy Hump Day!

  16. Emily FriedlanderTwitter: getdesti says:

    Hi Arelis,

I couldn’t have said it better myself, thanks Carol! We are actually a pretty small team, and we are working like crazy to improve Desti’s knowledge and add new content to Desti. We are in the US and Canada, with Mexico coming soon!
