Heading out on the road this Holiday season? Planning a road trip of epic proportion? All those other holiday drivers can lead to freeway frenzy, highway hazards, and long hours inside a moving vehicle. That epic road trip may result in seemingly endless hours on the open road. So what’s there to do when stuck for hours on end seatbelted within the confines of a car? Play road games, that’s what!
Whether it’s a road trip for a family Thanksgiving holiday, or a road trip across the country, playing a round of road games can make that drive move along faster, especially when traveling with children. Road trip games are also great for reconnecting with the family and creating cherished memories to last a lifetime. Nothing brings out family laughter more than a rousing round of silly car games!
Our Family Favorite Road Trip Games
Over the years we’ve spent many hours traveling by car. Along the way we’ve turned to road trip games to keep restless children entertained, and tired adults awake. These following family favorite car activities have been road tested through the years, and never seem to grow old, even though our kids have! So go on. Have fun the next time you’re stuck in a car!
Funky Fun Challenge With Photography Apps
Turn the car into a mobile photography studio with fun and funky photo apps. There’s sure to be lots of creative fun to pass the long drive, not to mention some awesome travel photos once that trip is over! These three favorite photography apps are sure to stimulate creativity and help make the long ride more enjoyable: Cam-Wow, iBooth and Face-In-Holes. Great fun for one, fun challenge for everyone to see who can create the most imaginative photo.
Name That License Plate!
See who can “find” the most states’ plates on passing cars. All that’s needed is a keen eye, and a need to pass the time. Change up the classic version and play License Plate Letter Lingo. This version is easy, and so much fun. Just pick three letters from a passing car’s license plate, then create funny sayings from those letters. MGW = Most Goofy Wins!
Or create your own family’s version of the License Plate game. Throw in some imagination and boom! Before you know it, you’re almost there.
The Classics: I-Spy and Slug-A-Bug
Electronic devices no longer have their appeal? Endless hours dead ahead? These tried and true classic car games are easy to play, don’t require an electronic device, and are easily adapted to your own family’s idea of fun. Whatever the age, I-Spy and Slug-A-Bug can be fun, and can keep things interesting. Hey, even our teenager will still take up the challenge of finding the Bugs before his brother does, or seeks out an I-Spy that will stump his brother! Though modifications from the classic versions may be required as the kids get older.
A Traveling Mom’s Road Trip Survival Tip
Who doesn’t dread that infamous chant – Are we there yet? Or the questioning crescendo of – How much longer? When will we get there? What time is it? I know I do! Here’s a tried and true method to help squash those incessant, pesky questions. Pay them! That’s right, pay them! Here’s how it works in three simple steps.
- Give your questioning child a bag of coins. Nickels, dimes, quarters, doesn’t matter.
- When your child asks one of those pesky questions, he pays you one coin from the bag.
- Whatever is left at the end of the trip, he keeps!
Now if that isn’t motivation to cut down on the arrival time questioning, what is! I do allow one free “ask” an hour. 🙂
