Travel. Funny how one simple word can prompt so many different meanderings of the mind. Swaying palm trees along a sun-bathed beach. Picture perfect mountain vistas shimmering in the distance. Cities brimming with nightlife and a cornucopia of delectable foods. A much-sought after escape from one’s every day life. A necessity for one’s employment.
Ah yes, travel. A word that is ubiquitous the world over. The word alone can evoke thoughts of good times to come. And it can evoke images of challenges to overcome along the way. Challenges like catching some shut-eye on that dreaded red-eye flight home. Or arriving in a time zone 8 hours different than your own. Or slacking off on your exercise routine while enjoying a little too much of the local cuisine.
Technology To The Rescue!
Don’t fret! Embrace those travel challenges with help from modern technology. Turn that red-eye flight into a shut-eye flight. Communicate with ease with the locals. Keep on top of weight gain. Tackle these ten travel problems with solutions afforded by today’s technology.
My Top 5 Travel Challenges Solved by Tech
As a modern day traveler, I too have learned to embrace technology to help my travels go more smoothly, with less worry and hassle. Does it always work? Well, no, not always. But more times than not, technology has helped me solve the problem, ease the worry, and lessen the hassle. Here’s my top five challenges, and the tech tools I won’t leave home without.
1. Airlines and Airports = Air Travel Apps
For as much as I have traveled, I am not a fan of air travel, especially those airports! Things happen along the way, from cancelled flights, to weather delays, to exceedingly long airport security lines. My solution? A plethora of air travel apps loaded on my iPhone. My go-to air travel apps include airline apps, TripIt, GateGuru, SeatGuru, Skyscanner, FlightBoard, TripTracker, and Hipmunk. They’ve saved my travel day on more than one occasion!
2. Traveling Along Unknown Roads = Road Travel Apps
I’m a map junkie. I need to know where I am, and how long it’s going to take to get where I am going. Not having access to my favorite road tripping apps would certainly amp up my worry. That’s why my iPhone, loaded with key road tripping apps, is essential for my on-the-road travels. Check out my complete list of favorite road tripping apps at My 12 Essential Travel Apps Perfect for Summer Road Trips.
3. Dead Electronic Devices = Portable Battery Chargers
From mobile travel reservations to entertainment for the kids, our mobile devices are essential to get the family through long days of travel. Having one go dead before the next available electrical outlet just isn’t good! That’s why I travel with two portable chargers. The Anker Astro is the size of a lipstick case, making it easy to stow practically anywhere. The larger GreatShield Power Tank has dual charging ports, perfect for the kids’ devices.
4. Risk of Wet Electronic Devices = Waterproof Cases
I always pack a waterproof cell phone case, whether or not my vacation plans include water activities. Small and lightweight, it’s easy to pack, and worth the security of having one “just in case” my travel plans shift. I also pack ziplock plastic bags for electronic devices like a Kindle or iPad. Though not technically waterproof, nor high-tech, they can save the day by keeping water and devices from accidentally coinciding.
5. Long Flights/Drives = Headphones & Kindle
Whether it’s a red-eye flight home or hours’ long car rides across the country, noise canceling headphones and my Kindle are staples in my travel repertoire. I’m a fidgeter. Sitting for hours with nothing to do stresses me out! Kindle and headphones to the rescue! Fresh music on the iPhone, new books on the Kindle, and I’m good for as long as I need.
